Trims beard, reduces mess, avoid bad power source decisions

Reviewer: Bialetti, New York, NY USA
I'm very happy with this purchase. There were three versions of the Trim 'n Vac: full-powered and corded, rechargeable battery powered, and plain battery powered. I read that there were problems replacing the rechargeable battery pack provided with the rechargeable model. Since I have a battery recharger, I thought the plain battery model made the most sense as I'll be able to recharge the batteries myself while having cordless operation.

It is amazing to see a sink with virtually no hair in it after trimming my beard. The vacuum actually works! I thought it was a stupid gimmick but had read some positive reviews on epinions.com. The unit works extremely well, although with it's vacuum function is probably a bit louder than other models on the market. I wouldn't say the noise is a problem, however.

The multi-adjustable head is bulky and needs care in order not to break when removing to use the shorter, more manageable beard guides. My feeling is that once I figure out which of the trimming guides I like best, that one will stay on the unit permanently and the others will be stored.

I like the simplicity of basic batteries, the low cost because of this, and the fact that you can easily use your own rechargeable batteries to have cordless operation.
Excellent Trimmer!

Reviewer: Andy L., Texas
I have owned this unit now for well over a year. I only came out here to see about replacing the adjustable guard that I broke...then I see someone putting a 1-star rating. I can't figure that but here is my review: As a 45+ male that's had a full but well sculptured beard/mustache I have to have something that works for me. I've had many trimmers over the years and am the most pleased with this one. The AA batteries make it to where I don't have to find an outlet - ever. Rechargeable batteries eventually wear out and you're stuck trying to find replacement batteries. Furthermore, rechargeable most often are Ni-Cad batteries and those are notorious for getting a charge memory engram on them - which is a major pain...have to fully charge/discharge frequently (and, as mentioned, eventually have to find replacements). So back to this one - I love the vac portion of it which, although isn't perfect (what is??) works wonderful (if you follow the directions) on helping keep the trimmings off the floor, counter, sink, etc. Since I believe in cleaning up my own messes (my wife loves that about me!) I appreciate less work surrounding keeping my beard/mustache looking professional.
Like better then my old plug-in

Reviewer: C. Page, CA
A lot more freedom then the older one with charger. I don't use it for close-line trimming.
Cheap Feel but Practical for International Travelers

Reviewer: Robert Salita, CHI PAR PHX SYD PDX CLD NKC
The cheap feel of the Wahl 5571-500 detracts from the first impression. However, its shaving performance was good. Vacuum performance was so-so. The trimmings collector had more hairs than I expected. Choosing and using the attachments requires patience. Expect a learning curve.

Now for the big secret. It uses 3 AA batteries. Nowhere on their website or sales literature does it divuldge that specific fact. Sloppy marketing? I dunno. I plan to use the trimmer internationally so I didn't want a 110v trimmer. I've been satisfactorly using older technology 1450ma AA rechargables so anything newer will likely be better.

The unit is warranted for two years. I can't imagine it will last that long. When it breaks, I'll post an update.

Update 13 April 2006:
Plastic cap pops off easily. I shave with one finger holding it in place. Otherwise, working well. I'm an infrequent beard shaver but am amazed at how long the batteries are lasting. Haven't had to recharge the batteries since first use.
Wahl Disappointed on This One - Bad Delivey on a Great Idea

Reviewer: C. Rodgers, Phoenix, AZ USA
Here were my reasons for choosing this trimmer over other brands. My number one reason - the Vacuum feature 2) Double A Battery operated 3) The Wahl brand name. Did anyone at Wahl actually test this item with consumers??? Wahl products have a good reputation for quality but, this product, in my humble opinion, is sub-standard.

I read the other reviews prior to my purchase and they were mixed on how well this trimmer kept the mess down and how well people liked this trimmer. So I thought I'd give it a shot. For my husband the vacuum feature of this trimmer didn't work at all, still hair all over the sink when he trims his Goatee. Maybe if you keep your Beard, Mustache or Goatee VERY short the vacuum on this device works, I don't know, others in their reviews said it worked for them.

The other thing that is not designed well on this trimmer is the way the fine trimming guides change out on the unit (the small guides included and shown in the Amazon picture above). They are hard to pop on and off making it inconvenient to use more than one fine adjustment (my husband uses two each time he shaves). My last complaint: the size of the trimmer is very large (due to the internal vacuum) and according to my husband cumbersome to hold and maneuver while trimming.

Overall... for my husband this purchase was a waste of money. Since it is not returnable to Amazon once it is opened and the only way to know if you like it is to open it and give it a try.

My advice: If after reading this review and the others on this site you still decide you want to give this trimmer a try -- purchase it local so when you get it home and your not happy you can return it and get you money back to try a different product. If you can't find it at your local store, believe me, spend your hard earned money on a different product.

A beard trimmer is a handy grooming tool for those with facial hair to have in their possession. These items come in many different styles and with various price tags attached to them. No matter how much you paid for your trimmer or how long you have had it for, keeping the grooming equipment in the best possible condition is a wise move to make. The following will provide some helpful hints in this department which will aid you in keeping your beard trimming equipment in the best shape possible.

The first thing you should do in order to keep your beard trimmer in good condition is to store it away in a safe place when not in use. Simply leaving it out on the counter all the time or throwing it carelessly in a drawer after every use will bang it up quite a bit and make it show wear and tear. It can also be accidentally knocked to the floor and damaged. Try to get a storage case for your trimmer, if one did not come with the product, and keep it in a location which is away from careless hands. Storing the trimmer safely away will keep dust off of it and prevent it from getting banged around.

Another way to keep the trimming equipment used to groom your beard in the best condition is to dry it off after every use, if it is a wet use trimmer or simply one which has gotten water on it. Keeping the equipment dry will prevent it from rusting and showing wear. Make sure to get in between all of the crevices of the trimmer as water has a way of finding its place in these spots. A trimmer which remains wet after use without having been dried off may present you with problems in the future such as malfunctioning during use or premature wearing of the blades.

You should also clean your beard trimming equipment after every use. Depending on the type of trimmer that you use, all you usually need to do is clear the item of excess hair. Certain trimmers will include exact cleaning instructions with the product which tell you how to clean the item and when to do so. Some you will find are self cleaning trimmers and others will require using a specific brush. Follow the instructions as best as possible so that your beard trimming equipment will stand the test of time.

Lastly, prior to storing your beard trimming equipment away after use you should remove any extra parts which do not usually remain permanently attached to the product. This too will help to prevent hair from becoming lodged within the trimmer and preventing the proper use thereof in the future. The parts can usually be removed during the cleaning portion of the beard trimmer use and you can simply store them away in the storage case alongside the trimmer where they will not get banged around.

Every man should grow out their beard at least once in their life. It is a symbol of manliness and a big change-up from the standard grooming of the modern American. However, it is essential to properly grow, trim, and care for your beard.

Before starting to grow your beard, there are some things to consider. Be sure to shave all of your facial hair off-such as goatees or mustaches– before growing your beard out. Neglecting to do so will cause part of your beard to grow faster than the rest.

Be prepared to grow your beard out for at least a month before trimming. This should put ¾ of an inch of hair on your face. No matter how you look, grow your beard out for one month. If your beard is patchy or incomplete after a month, growing a beard may not be in the cards for you. Consider other types of facial hair such as a goatee, mustache, or side burn chops. Some parts of your facial hair may grow faster than others, but this will be accounted for during the trimming and shaping phase.

In the middle stage of growing out your beard, you are going to look pretty bad. The period between week 1 and week 3 looks particularly bad. If your occupation requires customer face time, it might be wise to schedule a vacation for the second week of growing out your beard. When your beard is fully grown out, you will have a distinctive “Grizzly Adams” look. Don’t be troubled, as you will be trimming and shaping it.

Trimming your beard is tricky. Be sure to get yourself a beard and mustache trimmer and a fine toothed comb. This looks like a miniature set of clippers that your barber might use. The first step is to use the trimmer to cut your entire beard to about half an inch. Usually this is trimmer guard number three.

Next, your beard will need to be shaped. To shape the neckline, draw a line between your ears and completely shave everything below it with your trimmer without a guard. Next, draw a line straight down from the outside of your sideburns. Remove all of the hairs to the outside of this line.

An alternative to shaping and trimming your beard by yourself is to enlist the help of a professional barber. After having a professional shape your beard, you will be able to maintain it by using your old razor and trimmer. Every 2-3 days, you will need to shave the areas you’ve just trimmed off.

Approximately every week, you should set the trimmer to the same length you had before and trim the rest. Treat your beard as a part of the hair on your head. It should get shampooed at least every other day and conditioned if it has been damaged by sun or chlorine. After drying, comb it flat and straight.

Enjoy your beard!

Electric Beard Trimmer For Men

One of the great tools to come around for men is the beard trimmer. This device is a must have for any guy with any type of facial hair. This little device makes it so much easier to trim and cut your beard without the need of a scissor.

These trimmers will help you to shape and maintain your beard in just the right proportion. Most of the hair trimmers on the market today come with various attachments that are suitable for different types of facial hair. This helps to make sure that your beard is cut right at the right length on all sides.

Also it will allow you to experiment with how much facial hair will look good for you. Many of these trimmers are able to achieve a very close trim all the way down to the surface of your face. This is very helpful for those that like to style their beards and mustaches.

Since each person’s facial structure is unique you will need to test the different blades and attachments to see what will work for you. Some types of trim may work for some people, but might not look good for others. You can do different styles and trims to see what will look good on you. These beard trimmers will help you achieve the look you desire in no time.

These trimmers are also very easy to maintain. It’s always a good idea to put the trimmer away when not in use so to avoid any sort of wear or tear. You should also clean the heads of the trimmer after each use. If you allow the buildup of excessive hair on the blades then this can lead to a dull trimmer over time.

Beard Grooming Tips

The male beard has been a testament to the heroic, sturdy and robust image of the man in almost all the civilizations. Growing beard was considered as a symbol of masculinity and self confidence in various countries. Still, many people take pride in maintaining their long beard and flaunting it as a sign of power and courage. And why not? Proper beard grooming can give your personality a touch of elegance and attractiveness. Moreover, long, bushy and wild unkempt facial hair is unhygienic and very repelling! Grooming a beard is not a very difficult skill, that can only be executed by an expert. In fact, you don’t have to do anything to grow beard. It is the grooming part that needs to be practiced. With some dexterity and deft movements of your fingers, even you can achieve the perfect groomed beard and give new dimensions to your outward appearance. If you know, how to grow a beard, then you must be aware of some tips that can help you groom your beard.

Tips for Grooming Beard
Some of the prerequisites before grooming a beard are that you must properly clean the beard, before starting to groom it. Properly shampoo the beard (if it’s too long!), or just wash your face with a soap (if your beard size is shorter). After doing this, let the beard dry for sometime. Ensure that the beard dries properly, as it may show shrinking effect if it remains wet. If it is wet, the facial hairs may show variance in size while trimming or grooming the beard.

Beard Grooming Products
The tools that are a must requirement for grooming your beard are scissors and beard trimmers. Scissors that are used by the local barber can be handy in giving you a look of your choice. Barber’s scissors are very effective in giving a close trim. If you have a better control over combs, but can’t deftly work with scissors, then you can purchase a beard trimmer that can give you a better control and it is also very effective in trimming the beard to precision. The market is filled with shampoos that are meant specifically for washing the beard. You can use such products and groom your beards. Even beard massage oils are available to provide care for your beards.

Best Beard Grooming Tips To Follow
Following are some of the beard growing tips that one can follow to have a well shaped beard.

Cleanliness
If you have a long beard, then it is necessary to keep it clean and tidy. Just as you take proper steps for hair care, you need to be vigilant in regularly shampooing and cleaning the beard. When you use a shampoo or conditioner, make sure that you properly apply it to the hair follicles in the beard and massage gently down the face in circular motion. This will help you clean your beard effectively and remove any dust or dirt that might have accumulated in it.

Drying
Many people ignore it, but drying the beard after washing is extremely crucial. Dry the beard with the help of a clean and dry towel. Don’t press or rub the beard aggressively, as it may cause irritation or hurt the skin of the face. Dry it gently and with patience.

Conditioning
You may be having problems of dandruff in your beard! Sounds a bit weird, but yes there are many beard lovers who are troubled with these problems. Use a proper conditioner depending on the type of your skin and hair. Keep applying them at least thrice a week. Make sure you don’t over do facial skin care, but keep it balanced and avoid using too much of cosmetics.

Massage
You can occasionally massage your beard and the area around it by applying eucalyptus oil. Even olive oil is an excellent natural healer that strengthens the beard hair.

Trimming The Beard
Beard trimming balances the shape and size of your beard. Generally, it is advisable to use a trimmer at a setting of 1.5mm to 2.55mm that helps in getting a closer and nice trimmed beard. You can start trimming the border lines of your beard and give it a perfect look. Always move the beard trimmer vertically and ensure that you only trim the beard, just to remove the extra long hairs of the beard. Don’t make it look botchy. If you are adopting a particular beard style like the French cut, then a beard trimmer can help you get a crafted square or round border for the beard. It will also give you a good control over maintaining a constant hair length of all the hair on the beard. Always start from the border of the beard and gradually trim in the internal areas.

These were some of the beard growing tips that you can include in your daily life and get a great look for yourself.
